With much of the understanding of LGBTQI experiences being centred around the Gay and Lesbian experiences, Bi+ Network seeks to change that. A grassroots and volunteer-based centred on the Sydney bi+ community, concerned with their safety and wellbeing.
Their main goals are to improve the broader understanding of the bi+ experience through education, advocacy, and community initiatives, as well as being “dedicated to improving the well-being of bi+ people across Sydney”.
A core goal of the Bi+ Network is to educate the community about the unique challenges that face the bi+ community, such as combatting bi-erasure, the phenomena where bi+ individuals have their existence questioned and ignored by broader communities.
The group also aims to create an active bi+ community. This includes the creation of bi+ “specific spaces, where people have an opportunity to strengthen connections with one another and share stories about their lived experiences.”
The group’s directory on services and other community groups also serves to help connect bi+ people in Sydney to groups in the city and around the world, as well as re-directing to important mental health care, legal help and housing services.
Bi+ Network promotes and endorses many bi+ events, such as the annual Bilines Festival, aiming at promoting bi+ visibility.
