Now, don’t forget, the Equal Love Rally and Protest March for Equal Marriage Rights is on this Saturday.
Meet outside the State Library (cnr Swanston & La Trobe streets) at 1pm.
We need to speak up and tell the politicians we are not lower class citizens – we pay our taxes and contribute to society the same as everyone else (just with more style and panache!), so why are we not afforded all of the same rights as out heterosexual counterparts, just because we have partners who are of the same gender as us? To me, that doesn’t make sense and is just outright discrimination.
Places like the United Kingdom and more recently New York City have voted for same sex marriage, so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t have it here in Australia.
I’m a single lady — I know I know, I liked it and I really should have put a ring on it, — and alas, I’m not in a long term relationship. But that doesn’t change the fact that when I meet the man of my dreams, I’d like to have the choice to walk down the aisle (in a replica of Kate Middleton’s gown).
There are those of us out there who don’t believe in supporting marriage equality — and it’s their choice to not to — but don’t deny others their right to have the choice. I think it would be far better to have the choice to marry, than have no choice at all.
The biggest issue I have is with the attitude of PM Julia Gillard. As a self-confessed atheist living in a de facto relationship, she does a pretty good job letting religion dictate her choices. Hypocritical at the very least, don’t you think?
Anyway, wear something bright; hold hands with your partner (or even a friend); make a sign to carry! Prizes are on offer for best placard, so get your creative juices flowing and bring out the texta, paint and glitter.
There will be a mass illegal wedding ceremony taking place on the steps of the Marriage Registry at the end of the march and certificates will be given to those couples wanting to take part.
Get our those wedding garments and join us at the countries biggest rally for Marriage Equality hosted by Tracy Bartram in Melbourne on Sat 13 August.
Bumpa Love and I will see you there! We may even be doing a special performance!
