Ricky Martin condemned at home
Pop singer Ricky Martin (pictured) has been verbally attacked by religious leaders in his birthplace of Puerto Rico.
“To foster homosexuality or sexual promiscuity among our young people is certainly immoral, no matter where it comes from,” Cardinal Luis Aponte Martinez of San Juan told the Primera Hora website.
“Please, for the sake of the children, for whom I imagine you want the best, try to set an example to our young people of the great values we all share, besides sex.”
The comments came just weeks after Wanda Rolon, a Puerto Rican megachurch pastor, called Ricky Martin a person “who wants to take people to hell” in an online post.
When later explaining the post to reporters, she compared gay men to drug addicts and alcoholics.
“They continue being sons, brothers and cousins. They have always existed, but glorifying this behaviour — no.”
Martin responded to the comments at a recent concert, telling the audience, “All I want is for my homeland to be free of prejudice. Neither more nor less. Same!”
