Pride web attack
The Shanghai Pride Festival’s website was blocked behind a government firewall just as the festival began.
The website merely contained the places and times for events during the festival, which ran October 22 – 29.
This year’s theme was ‘Loving Living Giving’. Despite the website being taken down, 600 people made it to the opening night party, held discreetly in a Mexican restaurant in the city’s former French Quarter.
Organisers called the numbers a success. Other festival events included exhibitions, film screenings, a pub crawl and a closing party.
The first Shanghai Pride in 2009 was marred when several events shut down by the authorities.
