The Parade of Heroes
On they came, in their thousands: the athletes and officials of the Sydney 2002 Gay Games. Led as always by Team San Francisco, the parade of heroes was the longest single component of the opening ceremony. Some carried props and some tried their hand at choreography. Some wore uniforms; some wore not very much at all. Team Sydney emerged at the end, with 1,500 locals marching behind the banner. We were incredibly proud to be able to represent our city, said Team Sydney spokesperson Paul Long. It was a really remarkable moment.
