All you need is love
In the music world they’re known for their beautiful voices, but in the gay community Judi Connelli and Suzanne Johnston are more than that – they are inspirational divas.
The couple of 10 years’ standing are once again preparing to perform together on stage following the success of Perfect Strangers, the CD that earned them a prestigious ARIA award.
Connelli and Johnston say their new show, It Takes Two, is inspired by their 10-year relationship and will showcase some of the world’s greatest songs including hits from West Side Story and The Wizard of Oz.
Connelli says sharing the stage with someone you love is tricky but rewarding. “It’s going to be a unique show because of our song choices – but midway through our Opera House tour is our birthday,” Connelli said.
“Someone told us that we’re astro-twins because we share the same birthday,” Johnston added. “I’m turning 50 and Judi’s turning 60 – it’s on 20 July.”
“Because of our chemistry the songs have more meaning and it doesn’t get better than celebrating your birthday at the Opera House.”
Since they met in 1994, their unique combination of vocal styles has proved to be a hit, with successful tours of New York and London.
The two leading ladies are hoping for another sell-out season and believe their love and passion will inspire the country.
“It’s been 10 years since we moved in together,” Connelli said. “It’s been a fascinating time and a period of growth and change.”
After a sell-out season in Opera Australia’s The Pirates of Penzance, Connelli said It Takes Two would present a new challenge because she would no longer be the lead performer.
“We are both strong-willed women. When we get this close, working out the intricacies is really special,” she said. “It’s not about the ego because we focus on each other in the show.”
With their 11th anniversary fast approaching, the Australian musical legends said relationship success was not something that just happened.
“A good relationship is one that is continually growing and changing,” Connelli said. “So when we get to sing together, something special happens because we love each other’s voice – the experience is quite lovely.”
Johnston agreed: “It’s about not having expectations of each other and not blaming the other person for how you want it to be. To be in a relationship is about learning about yourself through the other person and I hope you see that through our show.”
