Ghana: human rights boss won’t protect gays
Ghana’s new head of its Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has said she doesn’t think homosexuality should be legal and won’t fight for the rights of sexual minorities.
In a radio interview on XFM 95.1, CHRAJ commissioner Lauretta Lampety said homosexuality was a criminal law issue, not a human rights issue given that homosexuality is illegal in Ghana.
“The debate has been about rights and the real issue is the legal side of things. There is [something illogical] in arguing for increased rights of homosexuals and at the same time saying that by law homosexuality is a criminal offence,” Lampety said.
The comments contradict previous statements by Lampety in support of decriminalisation, which she has since denied making.
