Divine Knights – Midnight
Having spent three years writing and recording together in Melbourne and London, and after two EP releases, electro pop duo Gerard Anthony and Beef — aka Divine Knights — offer up their debut album, Midnight. The openly gay duo certainly take their cues from queer musical forefathers, with their downbeat electro melancholia bringing to mind the Pet Shop Boys and the deep vocals sometimes reminiscent of Patrick Wolf. Highlights like Storm and Minoan Queen show the boys know their way around a winning pop melody, but at times the album suffers from slightly thin production — nothing a few remixes wouldn’t sort out, though. Overall, it’s an intriguing debut from a duo making music we don’t hear enough of from local acts.
