Object moves into the William Street creative hub

The City’s William Street creative hub – already home to a range of emerging and established creative tenants – welcomed an exciting new resident this week.

Object: Australian Design Centre has been awarded an accommodation grant for three showrooms at 101–111 and 113–115 William Street. It will use the space for exhibitions, workshops, events and education programs as it celebrates its 50th anniversary year.

The organisation was first established in 1965 as the Crafts Council of NSW. Its events and exhibitions each year feature more than 200 designers. In the past five years, this has generated over $1.2 million in revenue through artist fees and the sale of works.

At the launch event, Object also celebrated the inaugural Australian Design Honours. These new awards will see 50 major designers showcased in a special exhibition, to recognise their contribution in putting Sydney on the design map.

Object will be sharing the William Street creative hub with more new tenants who have moved into the upstairs live/work spaces, through the City’s creative spaces program, including visual artists, a production designer, a writer and a filmmaker.

The tenants have joined others working in studios, offices, co-working spaces and galleries in the fast growing creative hub.

Show us your Australian Life

The City of Sydney is calling on photographers from around the country to take a shot at one of the most popular photography competitions in Australia.

Australian Life invites photographers to submit images that portray Australia’s unique way of life. The finalists’ images will be blown up to bed-sheet size and showcased in an outdoor exhibition in Hyde Park from 18 September to 11 October.

Part of Art & About Sydney, and previously known as Sydney Life, the annual competition was renamed in 2014 when the City extended its invitation to submit images taken from across Australia.
