City scheme to recycle TVs
The City of Sydney is preparing for an expected surge in e-waste with a collection day for residents.
Free-to-air analogue television will be phased out by 2013, meaning households without a digital TV or set-top box will no longer receive a signal.
Televisions and computers contain toxic chemicals including lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium.
Since the city’s recycling program began in 2008, nearly 70 tonnes of e-waste have been collected.
The next e-waste collection will be on Sunday, September 12 at Bay Street Depot, Ultimo.
A Household Chemical CleanOut will occur on Saturday, July 10 for products like paint, varnish and solvents.
