Q&A with the new Lemons crew
SGLBA’s iconic event, Lemons with a Twist, has been going strong for over a decade, providing a space for lesbians and their friends to network and socialise.
Now ‘Lemons’, as it is fondly known in the community, is about to take on an exciting new flavour with the establishment of a sub-committee to run the monthly event and develop new plans for its future.
Taking on the job are Cheryl Webb (Webby), a community stalwart and well-known event producer for Dykes on Bikes and Sydney Leather Pride; Siobhan Towner, a vivacious events coordinator with many volunteer roles to her credit; and Amanda Honey, who is best known for creating a number of popular dinner clubs for lesbians and Girlfest social events. The new Lemons crew dish the dirt on their roles and plans.
Q. What made you want to join the Lemons sub-committee?
A. Webby: As a member and regular attendee and vollie at Lemons, I was happy to assist with this popular event on the girl’s social calendar. The Lemons with a Twist night is pretty unique in its concept, as we not only get to catch up with new friends and old, but it is also a great opportunity to meet new people and be exposed to the amazing variety of ‘Pink Business’ offerings that we may not normally be aware of through standard advertising platforms.
Q. Why do you think Lemons has such staying power?
A. Amanda: I think Lemons endures because it is such a great place to meet new people; it’s non-threatening, low key and you can have a chat in a friendly environment. Plus, you always know that it’s on every first Friday of the month. No matter what else comes and goes for women, Lemons is the event you can rely on.
Q. What we can expect from Lemons in the future?
A. Siobhan: Without giving too much away, we do have a few exciting ideas in the pipeline. The most important thing to us is to see what comes out of the upcoming SGLBA survey, so that we can shape the event around what all the loyal attendees want. We are also keen to get back to incorporating some of the business networking that Lemons originally featured. Lemons used to be such a good place to meet other businesswomen and we would like to see some more of that element come back to the earlier part of the evening.
