Getting active for Dry July
As Dry July this week draws to a close for another year, GLBTI community member Aisling Kelly (pictured) has had more to occupy her time than most in the battle to stay away from booze.
The self-confessed pub crawler, who has occasionally popped up on the scene pages of the Star Observer, works as part of a small, largely queer team for activity booking website GoDo. For Dry July, she decided to ditch alcohol for a month-long activities bender, embarking on some of the website’s activities including a skydive, ghost tour, surf lesson, jet boat adventure, and a gelato making class.
The journey has been the focus of a campaign to illustrate the alternatives to spending the winter in a dingy pub, upholding the Dry July goal of encouraging positive change and a healthy attitude to alcohol consumption.
The twenty five year old, originally from Waterford, Ireland, has lived in Sydney for over two and a half years.
“I really enjoy Sydney’s pub culture. A lot of social activity begins and ends at the pub during winter; in fact, we tend to default to the pubs as a rule in winter.”
GoDo got behind Aisling, working with its suppliers to serve up activities for her to do throughout the month, and in turn, GoDo is donating the cost of these activities back to the Dry July initiative. So far, Aisling’s raised nearly $1000, with a handful of activities yet to embark upon.
“It’s an important cause. We’ve all lost loved ones to cancer, and it feels good to support the initiative and help those who are living with the disease every day,” she said.
