Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the seventh film in the popular science fiction series, opens tomorrow around the world and it is expected to smash box office records.
The world has changed a lot since the first Star Wars film was released in 1977, especially in regards to LGBTI issues.
Despite copping flack for its lack of racial and sexual diversity, some LGBTI characters were introduced into the franchise’s recent book series.
Now, advertisers are coming to the party by combining Star Wars and LGBTI characters in television advertisements.
Recently, in France an ad featured two teenage boys playing with their “lightsabers”, which were sheathed in glow-in-the-dark condoms. The ad turns out to be for a mobile phone promotion, but it’s cute nonetheless:
Real-life parents and gay couple Larry Sullivan and David Monahan along with their son Cooper also appear in Campbell’s Soup ad, giving their best Darth Vader impersonations:
