Melbourne gears up for the Pride March Bake-Off
WITH Melbourne’s Midwinta festival now in full swing, the city’s LGBTI community is now preparing for one of the highlights in the event line-up — the Pride March Bake-Off.
The annual and iconic Bake Off, hosted by DTs Pub in Richmond, will occur just one week after Sydney’s own Bake-Off that raised funds for the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.
The Pride March Bake-Off was moved to an early date this Saturday to align with the inaugural Midwinta festival, which is run by same team behind Midsumma, Melbourne’s annual LGBTI cultural festival.
The event is the primary fundraiser for Pride March, which recently became part of the Midsumma banner, and it here that your skills in the kitchen could see you crowned as the baking king or queen of Melbourne.
“There have been some glorious and elaborate cakes in the past, so the bar has been set high,” a Midsummer spokesperson said.
“So grab yourself an apron, whip out the food colouring and beat those eggs. The competition is sure to be fierce.”
Categories include best novelty cake, best homemade cake and even a category for purchased cakes, catered specifically to people who don’t bake.
There is also a chance to take home a one of the cakes via an auction, with the funds raised going towards the running of Pride March in 2015.
The judging panel consists of Andrew Prior, MasterChef contestant and operator Queenies Food Tours, Sexy Galexy and Midsumma darling Kaye Sera.
The Bake-Off occurs a week before the headline event of Midwinta — The Black Tie Gala Ball — which has sold out.
Earlier this month, Midsumma organisers announced that their 2014 festival was a success and the biggest one yet, recovering from the loss they had in 2013 thanks to more than 120 stallholders at Carnival, 130-plus festival events across 85 venues and more than 180,000 people attending.
Submissions for Misdumma’s Premier Events in 2015 are now open and applications for Carnival stalls close at the end of the month.
