An exotic love story told through ballet

An exotic love story told through ballet

FALL in love with the spectacular work of La Bayadère as The Australian Ballet brings it to the Sydney Opera House for a limited season in November.

In this epic story of forbidden passion, a beautiful temple dancer and a heroic warrior fight for their love against a backdrop inspired by 19th-century visions of India.

Nikiya, a temple dancer, has fallen for the warrior Solor. However, as the lovers swear their devotion, the Rajah’s daughter, jealous of her rival’s beauty, plots their destruction.

When Nikiya dies from an “accidental” snakebite, the heartbroken hero goes on an opium-fuelled dream quest for his lost love. In the Kingdom of the Shades, they are reunited, and by the ballet’s end justice is spectacularly restored.

Every minute on stage is powered by explosive classical technique and fast-moving choreography among blazing colours, opulent sets and lavish costumes created by design visionary Peter Farmer.

Stanton Welch, resident choreographer of The Australian Ballet and artistic director of Houston Ballet, brings a masterful dimension to this classic, crafting the story with unrivalled dance technique and a hint of Bollywood sass.

A kaleidoscope of beauty, colour and spell-binding movement, La Bayadère will leave you in awe.
