Outgames scouts in NT
Darwin, Cairns and Coffs Harbour are in competition to host the 3rd Asia-Pacific Outgames, with a team of location scouts reportedly visiting the Northern Territory last month.
An editorial in The NT News backed the Darwin bid.
“The Outgames would be most welcome,” editor Matt Cunningham wrote.
“In many ways, the Territory is the most tolerant society in Australia — a place where people of any sexual orientation are welcome.
“Of course, all this may not do much for the Northern Territory’s macho image down south. Luckily Territorians couldn’t care less what southerners think — we like to run things our own way up here.”
The 3rd Asia-Pacific Outgames will boast a weeklong cultural festival and more than 15 sporting events, along with a three-day human rights conference, and is expected to attract more than 1000 LGBTI athletes to the host city.
The date for the Outgames will be determined once a winning city has been announced but it is expected to be held before May 2014 at the latest.
