Police reviewing video footage

Brunswick Police are reviewing video footage to determine if a 26-year-old man was assaulted while on stage at The East Brunswick Club.
Alex Ettling told Southern Star he heckled members of the band Midget after one used the homophobic remark -œno homo during the gig. -œNo homo is a slang term from the US used to infer a former comment or action is not homosexually suggestive.
The band’s bass player, Keith Hamlyn, said the group did not set out to make homophobic remarks and the comment was a joke that fell flat.
-œIt’s not who we are -” we’re not homophobes, Hamlyn said.
-œTo be honest it was just a joke and it might have been a bad joke, it was just taken out of context. The gay friends I’ve got would not take offence to the shit we said.
Ettling said he was invited on stage after heckling the band about the comment and that during an exchange with the band’s lead singer, Chris Moller, members of the audience threw glasses of beer at him, one hitting him in the face.
-œ[The glass] hit me in the face, I don’t know where it came from, Ettling said, adding that he then left the stage in a dazed state.
Hamlyn said he tried to calm the crowd after the glasses were thrown.
Ettling further alleges security staff at the club did not protect him during the attack nor did they eject the glass throwers.
The East Brunswick Club last week released a statement stating its performers did not represent the views of the venue and that it was supportive of diversity.
-œThe East Brunswick Club does not censor performers or artists, nor does it knowingly book or support performers or artists who have discriminatory, violent or anti-social agendas, music co-ordinator Martin Evans said.
-œThe East Brunswick Club always has and will continue to openly support diverse and minority community groups.
Sgt Michael Moloney from Brunswick Police said officers had obtained footage of the performance from the venue and were investigating Ettling’s claims.
-œWe’ll wait and see what’s on the footage and if there is something there we’ll pursue an assault, if not we’ll look at speaking further with the victim, he said.
