The Best Of… Sia
With the sad news that Australian indie-songstrel turned bona fide pop star Sia is stepping away from the limelight (as she tells it, she won’t interview, promote or tour again — where that leaves her career is anyone’s guess), her Aussie label Inertia has released this comprehensive collection for all those fans who’ve come on board in the past couple of years.
It’s a diverse mix of tracks from her last three studio albums (but not her breakthrough, 2001’s neo-soul gem Healing Is Difficult), plus a handful of non-album gems.
Her output in recent years has been so buoyant — see upbeat songs like Clap Your Hands, You’ve Changed and Bring Night — it’s easy to forget Sia originally made her name as a purveyor of moody, mumbled ballads. The best of these — Breathe Me — is included here, and stands as her best song, if not one of the best songs, of all time. Fans of the power and drama of that track will enjoy her contribution to the Twilight soundtrack, My Love, also included here.
There are a couple of odd omissions (two of her best singles, Don’t Let Me Down and I’m In Here, are neglected in favour of album tracks), but The Best Of… is a welcome collation of the first — and hopefully not last — decade of music from a true pop maverick.
All we need now is a DVD of all her fantastic video clips!
