Gay fighters prepare for Cologne

The Gay and Lesbian Martial Arts Club (GLMA) will send a team of six to compete in the Cologne Gay Games this August.
GLMA and Same-Sex Salsa founder Penny Gulliver said the team was in hardcore training mode in order to reach the high standards that the club’s reputation is based upon.
“The team will be entering into the multi-styled competition. We’re expected to perform well as at the last Gay Games, GLMA won eight medals between three students,” Gulliver told Sydney Star Observer.
“The participants are training most nights of the week, working hard on their forms and even entering into straight tournaments to help get prepared.”
More than 100 martial arts exponents are expected compete in the 2010 Gay Games.
GLMA will hold a free self-defence workshop this Saturday, March 6, before its seasonal kickboxing workshop starts on Thursday, March 25. The eight-week intensive self-defence course starts on Tuesday, March 23.
In the meantime, a same-sex salsa course will start on Friday, March 6, at 7pm, with all proceeds going to GLMA participants travelling to the Gay Games.
“We’re hoping to raise about $3000 for GLMA students with this salsa course,” Gulliver said.
“It’s about supporting our community while having a good time and learning a dance step or two.”
