Star Romance photo competition winners revealed
We put a call out for images that reflected the ways in which relationships from all across the LGBTI spectrum and beyond featured the same core: love.
The response was immense: hundreds of images were uploaded to the Star Romance portal. Our judges, Star Observer photographer Ann-Marie Calilhanna and SameLove Photography’s Frank Farrugia, had a difficult time selecting the top three best photos.
The winner they chose in the end was Mark Wilcockson’s beach photo. Congratulations Mark, you are the lucky owner of two Seiko Chronographs valued at $1700. Read on to see what our judges thought of each of the top three images.

Boys on the Beach

ANN-MARIE: I was drawn in to the connection of the boys’ intimacy. They are completely comfortable with each other and connected through the composition of their bodies laying in the sand and holding hands. The busyness of the textures and colours keeps you looking for more within the photo. I can feel all five elements surrounding them.
FRANK: It’s a dynamic photo. I love the shape the boys make with their body, at the same time expressing their comfort and enjoyment of each other’s company. The joining of hands mixed with the lack of eye of contact just highlights the love and
companionship between the couple.

ANN-MARIE: I love the look of forever bliss between the girls, just married and wearing the biggest smiles of eternal love for each other. Surrounded by the lush green backdrop, this makes the girls stand out in their crisp white wed- ding dresses.

FRANK: I think everyone would agree that this is simply a beautiful image. The contact between the couple is so strong and seen on a number of levels: the close contact, the connecting of hands and the kiss on the forehead. It’s connections like this that represents touch as a strong form of communication.
ANN-MARIE: This image makes me take a big deep breath too immerse myself in the moment love surrounded in so much space. The contrast of the boys’ colourful clothing against the wind blowing through the long, reedy grasses. The softness of the kiss on the forehead as their eyes are softly closed as the sun sets on the end of a beautiful day.
